Working, Building, Performing Better as a Team

In one team-building workshop I did, we weighed the idea that a team was a group of people going in the same direction.  So a busload of people, headed toward the city, were an example of a team, right?  Of course, not.  So what truly defines a team?  Consider this cartoon.

That was a workshop in Dubai, and at the time the Burj Khalifa, slated to be the tallest building in the world, was under construction.  "Imagine you and two colleagues are at the very top of the Burj," I suggested to them, "and you have to rely on each other, not only to get the job done but also to ensure your safety."  That's teamwork:  A group of people, who need to, and must, work together, in order to serve a common purpose.

A high-impact workshop for top leaders and their teams

One of the age-old truths in organizations is, You cannot do it all by yourself.  For both leader and members alike, team is a fundamental necessity.  It is instructive and inspiring to hear success stories of teamwork, but in reality it can be tough to pull disparate people together and galvanize them under a shared vision.  So this two-day workshop focuses not just on the what and why, but also the how of teamwork.

Gallup Q12 Engagement Model (image credit)

In so doing, we draw on the Gallup model of engagement.  They positioned the above 12 elements as crucial guideposts, in order to be a great leader.  But in their research, anyone in the team can offer recognition, encouragement and development, just as much as the manager.  Moreover, these elements have a line-of-sight to more engaged customers, sustained revenue growth, and increased shareholder value.  So the 'soft skill' of teamwork produces 'hard results.'

What you expect
  • Define what teamwork really means, in reference to best practices and lessons learned across organizations and also in the particular context of your own organization (what)
  • Clarify the purpose of your team, and its mandate and expectations; surface and resolve fundamental differences of opinion or frank conflict among you (why)
  • Identify what it will take to work more effectively, build stronger relationships, and serve that purpose with high-level performance, drawing on the Gallup model (how)

What we deliver
  • An overarching meta-framework - The Core Algorithm - that helps top leaders identify the strategies, people and process that work best for them and their teams, mandate and situation
  • A walk-through of the Gallup model, in order to gain a conceptual grasp of what it is and how it helps teams
  • A focus on whatever areas of teamwork are crucial for particular leaders and teams, such as (a) understanding oneself and each other's style; (b) building relationships, improving collaboration, and resolving conflict; (c) engaging and developing multicultural teams; and (d) discussing real issues, taking right action, and driving performance

Finally, in sports especially, it is said so frequently, as to become cliched and tiresome:  There is no "I" in team.  But, oh, there is most certainly is, and there are often a lot of them.  In this high-impact workshop, we navigate the real tension between team and individual, and find the equilibrium that works best for all of them.

Thinking Strategically, Executing Effectively

Which is more important:  strategy or execution?  Put differently:  Is it better to create a good strategy, but execute it badly; or come up with a bad strategy, but execute it really well?

This makes for a thought-provoking discussion, and perhaps leaders come up with useful insights in the process.  In the challenging reality of business, however, this question is artificial and nonsense.  Of course, both are important, and probably in equal measures.  But how leaders arrive at strategy, how they translate it into an actionable plan, and how they get done what they set out to get done are the crux of the matter.

A high-impact workshop for top leaders

This two-day high-impact workshop for top leaders focuses on, and operates at, the crux of the matter.  From the leadership programs I've conducted, there is some confusion about what strategy is.  So we clarify this with a definition, not in the abstract or academic sense, but in the concrete framework of the leaders' organization.  To bridge strategy to execution, then, we draw on the model of Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan, i.e., strategy, people and operations.  Our leaders consequently leave the workshop with greater knowledge and confidence and with an effective game plan to take action on, once back in the organization.

What you expect
  • Clarify strategy vis-a-vis execution, and appreciate the practical importance of both
  • Grasp the Bossidy and Charan model, in relation to the priorities, structure and challenges of your organization
  • Build greater skills at thinking strategically and executing effectively
  • Arrive at a strategy-directed, execution-focused game plan on organizational aims

What we deliver
  • A useful model for grasping strategy, in relation to vision, mission and values, focusing on circles of responsibility
  • Practical learning and hands-on application of an execution model, focusing on strategy, people and operations
  • Purpose-driven development of skills in thinking strategically and executing effectively, while working through their leadership team and frontline staff
  • Business-relevant game plan on organizational aims, with support and guidance on delivering it in the organization, well after the workshop

Engaging Staff, Driving Results

Engagement is quite the rave among organizations, and top leaders push initiatives to raise levels of it among their staff.  Yet, what does it really mean, for what purpose is it useful, and how well do such initiatives work?  I encourage top leaders to review their business critically, first, and get a crystal-clear line of sight on what they need to accomplish most and on where obstacles or shortcomings hinder them.

Second, it's a walk-backwards process from their aim (where they want to be), to the current state of their business, organization and people (where they are now).  Most likely, engagement will figure prominently in bridging the future and the present, because it has such a wide-sweeping importance for the organization.  Nevertheless, this walk-backwards process will confirm it, and shed light on the nature and extent of it and on its particular value vis-a-vis that aim.

Finally, how top leaders implement engagement efforts matters a great deal, certainly.  I have found diverse but converging research from Gallup, McKinsey and James Collins that a relationship-oriented leadership has direct benefits on business results, such as revenue growth and shareholder value.  To realize their aim, therefore, requires them to account inviolably for people in their efforts to implement.

A high-impact workshop for top leaders

This three-day workshop is geared for top leaders, who have the distinct challenge of not just driving engagement efforts directly, but also getting their managers and staff to drive these in their own right as well.  The three-step process, described above, is my practical applications model - The Core Algorithm - for hitting tough targets, meeting challenges, and solving problems.  With this model as an organizing structure, this workshop promises to be very informative, enjoyable and practical.  Its main deliverable will be a comprehensive action plan for engaging staff and driving results.

What you expect
  • Gain a clearer line of sight on aims, challenges or issues affecting the business
  • Grasp firmly what staff engagement is and how it helps with these aims
  • Engage staff effectively and drive results successfully

What we deliver
  • Lessons on The Core Algorithm and the Gallup Q12 model of engagement
  • Paradigm for raising individual motivation, in relation to team and organizational priorities
  • Walk-through of established and organization-specific measures of engagement
  • Practical strategy, useful road map, and implement-ready action plan

Becoming an HR Business Leader

The essential challenge for HR senior leaders is to stake their credibility and expertise in the executive ranks of their company. Traditionally, HR is relegated to creating policies and procedures, implementing company strategy, and abiding by its mandates. Then, HR gained a seat at the executive table. As business partners, for example, they contributed to high level discussions on strategy, operations, and budgets.

I argue that all of this is critical, but not enough. HR must assert itself as a shaper and driver of strategy for the company, and advise on HR issues wholly within the business context and not as an isolated function.

A high-impact workshop for HR senior leaders

This two-day workshop serves this purpose for HR senior leaders, and presents a new paradigm and involves practical activities. It promises to be an active, enjoyable learning experience, and its main deliverable will be a comprehensive action plan for becoming an HR business leader!

What you expect
  • Gain greater credibility and have greater impact, among company executives
  • Shape and drive strategy, not just offer input or implement strategy
  • Offer HR advice woven into the business context, not as an isolated function

What we deliver
  • Grasp the Challenge Paradigm for HR senior leaders, on Business and Leadership
  • Engage in pratical discussions and hands-on activities for each of these challenges
  • Introduce the Theory of Algorithm as a leading-edge conceptual framework for dealing with these challenges
  • Critically review and integrate lessons learned into a comprehensive action plan to take back to work
